| History of League |
The League was launched at the start of the 1993/94 season and was then known as "The Ormiston Girls Football League." Eventually, with participation far from restricted to the North East end of the county, the League was accepted into the Essex County Football Association structure and re-named accordingly.
From 2000/2001 the Secretary’s home address became the League HQ. With support and active backing from county officials, growth and development was assured.
Initially operating on a seven-a-side format with Under-12 and 14 age-groups, the League experimented with an Under-16 section in 1995/96, responding to a growing need for girls to be provided with a natural stepping-stone between junior football and the full women's game. However the small-sided emphasis was clearly at that time not ideal for older teenagers and the League reverted to just the two younger groupings the following season.
The 1998/99 campaign reflected ongoing growth with, for the first time, four separate age-group competitions and, in the Under-12 section, sufficient teams for A and B divisions.
Across the county more and more junior schools were encouraging the game amongst girls, and in 1998/99 this resulted in the formation of a new Under-11 competition.
In the following year, with the top ages preferring to remain in age-groupings rather than be propelled straight into the rigors of eleven-a-side competition with older and experienced women, back came the Under-16s section - with a vengeance!
2002/03 welcomed the arrival of an even older age-group, encouraging girls to continue with youth football before eventually progressing to the full vigours of the women’s game.
Weather permitting, ECGFL have responded over the years to nationwide FA promotion of Mini Soccer as an introduction for younger players and have organised a series of Festival Days for girls in school years 3-5. The success of those Festivals has led to the introduction of an Under-10 section for 2003/2004.
The League Management Committee, in their ongoing quest for development and growth, will continue to look at ways to promote the game amongst younger players and are currently discussing various possibilities with schools and clubs across the county.
The Essex County Girls Football League is proud of its record of thirteen full years supporting the clubs and encouraging involvement from young players and assisting the formation of new community teams. The League is always on the lookout for new development initiatives to maintain the growth and ever-increasing quality of the game.
